February 21 & 22, 2026

Saturday and Sunday

Both performances will begin at 4:00pm

Like a spell cast in sound, the Reno Phil conjures an evening in the pursuit of magic, where music shimmers, soars, and ignites the imagination. At the heart of it all is Stravinsky's Firebird Suite, bursting into a glorious blaze of color, rhythm, and enchantment. The journey begins with Jonathan Sokol's What Trees May Speak, a mysterious and evocative soundscape where nature whispers its hidden truths. The night comes to a triumphant close with Jon Nakamatsu, longtime favorite of the Phil, whose clarity, depth, and expressive command makes him an ideal interpreter of one of the most beloved works in the repertoire.

ON THE PROGRAM

Jonathan Sokol What Trees May Speak

Igor Stravinsky The Firebird Suite (1919)

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 op. 23 in B-flat minor

Jon Nakamatsu, Piano

Now in his third decade of touring worldwide, American pianist Jon Nakamatsu continues to draw critical and public acclaim for his intensity, elegance and electrifying solo, concerto and chamber music performances. Catapulted to international attention in 1997 as the Gold Medalist of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition—the only American to achieve this distinction since 1981.

Laura Jackson, Conductor

An eloquent and articulate artist on and off the podium renowned for her dynamic leadership, energetic performances, and progressive vision, American conductor Laura Jackson is praised for her innovation, passion, and commitment to the continued growth of the symphonic repertoire and expanding music’s impact within communities. Having served as the fourth Music Director and Conductor of the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra (Reno Phil) since 2009, her contract has been unanimously renewed through the end of the 2028-2029 season, ensuring that diverse, compelling repertoire, and creative community programming will continue through the organization’s 60th anniversary.

Dungeons & Drama: Castle Rats

Dungeons & Drama is a live theatrical experience that fuses the imaginative gameplay of "Dungeons & Dragons" with improvised performance.

Four players control four heroic avatars, guided by a Game Master who shapes the unfolding narrative in real time. As the story emerges through dice rolls & player choices, a cast of improv actors brings the world to life - embodying non-player characters, creatures, and pivotal figures within the adventure.

Fully staged with professional lighting, sound design, and theatrical events, Dungeons & Drama transforms tabletop roleplaying into an immersive, audience-facing spectacle. Audience members are invited to participate in select moments, influencing the direction of the story and deepening their connection to the performance.

Each show is entirely unique, blending fantasy, comedy, drama, and chance into a collaborative storytelling event that exists only in that moment.

Thursday, April 30th -

Untamed

99 plays ranging from 30 seconds to over five minutes in length performed over two three-night blocks, chosen at random by the audience in the moment, and all fueled by an absurdist, high-energy spirit. This is ‘Untamed,’ the sporadically occurring collaborative artistic endeavor created by the late Bud Perry, who drew inspiration from the likes of The Neo-Futurists and other similar collectives. Consisting of a blend of sketch comedy, serious scenes, and personal monologues, the plays are all written by the performers themselves and presented à la carte for your enjoyment. ‘Untamed’ guarantees a truly unique experience for each performance, with just 33 of the 99 plays being picked each show, and never seen again. Its like ‘SNL’ meets all-you-can-eat sushi— only funnier and with slightly less likelihood of food poisoning. ‘Untamed.’ Hope you’re hungry.

Into the Time Horizon

This exhibition, which occupies every gallery of the Museum, invites visitors to consider how to move forward on our planet—ethically, responsibly, and with care for coming generations. It strives to catalyze and amplify protection for the Earth and build an awareness around environmental concerns on many different levels. In the process, it promotes forward-thinking models rooted in collectivity, engagement, and collaboration.

A “time horizon,” a concept mostly used in economics, is a point in the future that one sets for the length of an investment. In his acclaimed novel The Ministry for the Future, Kim Stanley Robinson astutely describes the environment’s time horizon as the window of opportunity we still have to avert the most cataclysmic effects of climate change.

The pattern of rising temperatures is evident in desert communities such as Reno, which has the unfortunate title of being the fastest warming city in the United States (with Las Vegas coming in second). Since 1970, Reno’s average annual temperature has increased by 7.8°F.

Into the Time Horizon encompasses seven discrete thematic sections, while also including several large-scale installations that interweave the project’s primary concerns. Including nearly 200 artists, the exhibition sheds insight into the wide range of output, across all mediums, of makers who are integrating environmentalism into their innovative creative approaches.

Ecofeminism is a recurring motif, with more than 50 percent of the artists identifying as female.

The Classix Series

The Classix Series comes to a triumphant close in the pursuit of happiness, where the program echoes with freedom, resilience, and unrelenting joy.

The evening begins with Bernstein’s electrifying On the Waterfront Symphonic Suite, pulsing with cinematic drama and raw intensity.

The Reno Phil will proudly unveil a newly commissioned work by Michelle Isaac, Pressing Truths, written to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The work is inspired by the story of Mary Katherine Goddard, the only woman to sign the historic document—a testament to courage, conviction, and the power of a single voice to shape history.

The season reaches its grand finale with Orff’s Carmina Burana, an exhilarating choral tour de force featuring the Reno Phil Chorus and a powerhouse trio of soloists, its thunderous rhythms and ecstatic melodies transform the concert hall into a whirlwind of fate, fortune, and unrestrained joy.

We are pleased to announce that the Reno Phil will be joined by the Sierra Nevada Children's Chorus for the performance of Carmina Burana.

Carson City held its third annual Murals & Music Festival in 2025.

The project was started in 2023, and so far they’ve kept their promise of making it an annual thing.

Some repeat artists coming back every year to create new murals. And downtown is quickly filling up with art.

The official map claims that 73 new murals have been added, most from the three years of the festival but some in the previous decade or so.

Unfamiliar with Elko’s boots? Here’s the story. The town of Elko turned 100 in 2017. As part of the centennial celebrations, the Elko Arts and Culture Advisory Board tapped artists to help raise awareness about the area’s blossoming arts scene. The result: 36 striking hand-painted boots made of polyurethane resin and colorfully painted in tribute to Elko’s cultural diversity and history. Each Centennial Boot stands six feet tall and weighs 110 pounds.

Part of the fun is uncovering the meaning of each boot. Some are painted to commemorate the area’s Hispanic heritage, while others depict ranch and farm life. Others highlight the beauty of the nearby Ruby Mountains, while some show off Northeastern Nevada’s stunning landscapes and blue skies that seem to go on forever.

Once you see one, you absolutely have to see them all, and they’re tailor-made for social media photos or just capturing your time spent in Elko. Learn more about Elko’s arts and culture scene and our famous painted wall murals here.

Known as the “Swiss Alps of Nevada,” the Ruby Mountains are a glacier-carved paradise full of endless outdoor adventure. Hike, backpack, and fish to your heart’s content all summer long surrounded by alpine lakes and streams, tree-lined canyons, and towering peaks. Come winter, the Rubies boast some of the driest, fluffiest snow out there, beckoning snowshoers, snowmobilers, and powder-hungry backcountry and heli-skiers alike.
